How To Use Space In Your Storage Unit Effectively

Posted on

Storage units are a great way to get things you don't use everyday out of your home and free up space. However, since you usually pay for a storage unit based on its size, it's important to make the most of the space you have available to you. This guide features three storage hacks that will let you squeeze more of your things into your storage unit, no matter what the size.

Prioritize Frequently-Used Stuff

If you're going to store things that you'll still need to use from time to time, make sure to store those items at the front of your storage unit or at the top of stacks and shelving units. This can save you time and annoyance when you want to grab important things.

Use The Walls

Simply putting all of your stuff in the room probably isn't making good use of all the walls of your storage unit. Instead of piling things up near the wall that you'll have to struggle to take down, try putting shelving units or wire racks on the wall. Look for one that matches the height of the wall so you can store things all the way to the ceiling of your unit.

Clothing Hangers & Vacuum Bags

If you plan to store clothing in your storage unit, don't just stuff them into cardboard boxes. Cardboard boxes can break down and rot if exposed to humid air or moisture, they take up a lot of space and when they're taped shut, they can be a nuisance to crack open. Instead, try this neat hack for hanging a lot of clothes in a small space.

You will need:

  • S-Hooks
  • Heavy Chains - Choose one with big links and at least a half a dozen links on the chain. Make sure the chain isn't too long, or your clothing may drag on the ground.
  • A Hanger Rack

Place your S-hooks on your hanger rack, like you're hanging a hanger there. Then, attach the first loop of the chain to the other end of the S-hook. Repeat this step until all of your S-hooks and chains are attached. Then, with your clothes on hangers, place each clothes hanger hook through the chain link loop.

Now you can vertically store many sets of clothing without needing tons of hanger racks for them all!

If you have clothes you can't or don't want to hang up, try using a vacuum storage bag. Once sealed, you can use a vacuum hose to suck out the air in the bag, making it dramatically flatter, so you can store more clothing in a small space.

With these tips, you'll have an easier-to-access storage unit that can safely and efficiently hold more of your stuff.
