Preparing Your Home For Bed Bug Extermination Services

Posted on

Bed bugs are home pests that make your life miserable. They bite you, causing you to itch and scratch, which can create cuts and sores that can become infected. Unfortunately, getting rid of these small bugs is not easy. You may think you have eradicated them only to find they have just been waiting to hatch and invade the house again. To completely eliminate bed bugs for good, you are going to need to contact a bed bug extermination service. However, it is not as simple as making the appointment and leaving the house while they do their job. You need to prepare the house for the technicians or you will never be rid of the pests. Here are the main things you need to do before the exterminators show up.

Wash All Cloth Material

Anything made of a cloth of some type -- bedding, clothing, linens, and window curtains -- all need to be washed in hot water and dried at a high temperature. Once dry, place everything in plastic bags or containers that can be sealed completely.

Empty Closets

Empty the closets of any room where you have found bed bugs. You need to be honest and realistic about this. If you think it is possible a room has the pests, empty the closet. The exterminators need to get into the closets and treat them for pests. They need to be able to treat the carpeting or flooring around any trim. They will also need to treat any shelves and pull them out to treat between the shelf and the wall.

Remove Drawers

Remove the drawers from all dressers and nightstands. Place them on the floor so the technicians can get inside all the crevices of the furniture. They will then treat the drawers and place them on top of the furniture to make room to treat the carpet and rest of the room properly.

Move Furniture

Bed bugs like to hide in corners and against walls and under any carpeting. Move all furniture to the center of the rooms. The technicians will treat around the perimeter of the rooms, making sure to get under the carpet and paying close attention to the trim and molding. They will then move the furniture back and treat the center of the room.

You, your family, and any pets will need to be out of the house during treatments and for a few hours afterward. While out, be sure to shower, wash your hair, and wash all your clothing and any luggage or bags you have. You don't want to bring bugs back into the house.
