What Type Of Student Housing Is Best For You?

Posted on

If you're a college student trying to decide on the best housing option to fit your needs, you will need to figure a few things out first. You will have many choices when searching for a place, which can seem quite challenging, but once you know what you're looking for, everything becomes much more manageable. The key is to consider all the details of your future college experience so you know what type of housing makes sense.

Before you start officially looking for a place to live while you attend school, you should ask yourself the following questions so you end up in housing that works for you:

Do You Want to Live on Campus?

Most colleges offer rental units to their students, such as dormitories and apartments. They may include things like utilities, access to meals, etc. However, you will be at the mercy of the university if you choose to live on campus, and your actions at home could negatively affect your standings with the school.

Off-campus housing is privately-owned but usually still relatively close to the school. If you prefer to keep your home life and student life separated, it's a good option to consider. Off-campus housing is sometimes more affordable than on-campus options, but fewer things are usually included in the rent, like utilities and meals.

How Will You Get to Class?

How are you planning on getting to class every day? If you want to walk, you must choose a student housing option that will allow you to do that—somewhere close to the school. If you're planning on taking public transportation, you will need to live somewhere with a nearby train station or bus stop.

Will You Have Roommates?

Many college students decide to live with one or more roommates to pay less for rent and utilities. Are you looking to live with other students, and if so, do you have them picked out already, or are you going to rent a room in a place that already has other students living there? It's nice to pay less, but you need to carefully consider whether or not you prefer to have more privacy because living with other people comes with challenges.

Do You Want to Be Near Anything Specific?

Will you be working while attending school? If so, you might want to choose a housing option near where you'll be working. You should consider other places you might want to live near, like shops, restaurants, bars, a gym, etc.
